During winter weather safety experts recommend braking gently in icy conditions and avoiding jerky steering movements. Other recommendations include:

• Increase following distance
• Drive slower
• Look far ahead to give as much reaction time as possible

Loss of control accidents often occur when commercial drivers overestimate their driving ability or the ability of their vehicles to maintain proper traction. In extreme weather, commercial drivers should find a safe place to pull off the road, notify dispatch of their location and wait for weather conditions to improve to resume travel.
