An electronic logging device (ELD) malfunction is when the unit is no longer functioning and you are unable to create a record of duty. In those cases, commercial drivers must reconstruct the record of duty for the current 24-hour period along with the previous seven consecutive days. Always maintain a supply of paper record of duty grids in the vehicle. Solo drivers will need a supply of eight paper records. A team operation will need 16 records. During a roadside inspection the officer will ask to see the supply of paper records of duty status grids. If there is not a sufficient supply, the driver will be issued a violation.
