When hauling hazardous materials, paperwork must always remain within arm’s reach. If a commercial driver leaves the vehicle, they must leave the paperwork on the driver’s seat or driver side door pouch. During an inspection, the inspector may ask for paperwork to be brought inside. In this case, prior to removing the paperwork, the commercial driver should verify with the inspector that it is alright to remove the paperwork, since he or she is transporting hazardous materials.
This supports knowledge of the regulation and prevents the inspector from issuing a violation for not leaving the paperwork in the vehicle. If the shipper allows for a copy of the hazardous bill of lading to be made, a copy can be left in the truck and the other one taken inside to ensure compliance..
