Safety experts warn that carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Initial symptoms mimic the flu and may include headache, fatigue, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and/or tightening across the chest. Sudden chest pain may occur in people with angina. Prolonged exposure can result in vomiting, confusion, muscle weakness, collapse and perhaps death. Exhaust system leaks are especially dangerous when cab ventilation may be poor. Other sources of carbon monoxide can be due to excessive idling, and use of a unvented heater in the cab area. Safety experts recommend having a carbon monoxide detector in the vehicle to detect the presence of carbon monoxide. Perform regular maintenance checks on the engine and sleeper heater exhaust systems.
