According to law enforcement, the most two obvious reasons to stop a CMV are violating local laws and observable defects associated with the vehicle. Doing a thorough pre-trip inspection can help catch any observable defect and prevent the violation from being issued.
The FMCSA’s PSP program maintains a record for each driver for three years on their roadside inspection performance. That record can be used during future roadside inspections to look for patterns of non-compliance associated with that driver.
