Every violation found on a roadside inspection contributes to a motor carrier’s overall Inspection Selection Score. The Inspection Selection score is used by law enforcement to target motor carriers for increased inspections. If a motor carrier receives more violations on inspections, they will be subject to more inspections.
Every contractor and/or their driver(s) can help lessen the number of inspections by avoiding violations. Reduce observable defects, which is the reason law enforcement stops vehicles initially. Common observable defects include moving violations, such as speeding, lane restrictions, or failure to obey traffic control devices. On the vehicle, the most frequent observable defect is associated with lighting. Doing a thorough pre-trip inspection and carrying spare fuses can help eliminate these violations.
